Four Little Dragon Martial Arts Ideas

Image
We run kids’ taekwondo classes for “little dragons.” These are children from four to six. While young children are still developing their interests and personalities, there are things you can do to support their interest in martial arts and other goals for their development that are enhanced by martial arts. Here are some of our best ideas to help you support your little dragons, other than by enrolling them in karate classes for kids. After Class Debriefing One of the best ways to encourage your child’s interest in anything is simply to talk to them about it. For young children, who may not remember much about the class a few days later, the best time to talk to them about it is right after. Having a  little dragons karate class  debriefing on the ride home or when you get home is a great idea. Ask your child how their class went, what they learned, what they are trying to improve, or other questions about martial arts. This is a good practice for parents who don’t know much about m

How Do I Introduce My Child to Martial Arts?

Image
We find that parents these days are very dedicated to offering their children opportunities for enrichment, including opportunities to develop physical skills. Many parents recognize the value of martial arts for helping a child grow physically and emotionally, even if they did not pursue kids’ martial arts when they were young. That puts some parents in an odd position: you want to introduce your child to martial arts and support them, but you don’t know how. It’s hard to connect with your kid and monitor their progress when you don’t know what the class is all about. How do you introduce your child to martial arts? There is more to it than just signing up for karate classes for kids. Here are our tips. Start at a Young Age It’s (almost) never too early to start a martial art. We accept students as young as four in our   Little Dragons  class . The younger a child starts in martial arts the larger an impact it can have on their life and the more they can learn from it. Understand th

Summer Taekwondo – Flexibility and Kicking Fundamentals

Flexibility is one of the most important skills to train if taekwondo is the martial art for you. This is necessary for learning how to do most of the moves and techniques, including kicks. At Dragon Taekwondo, our martial arts classes and summer camps include flexibility training to help children and beginners achieve their goals and unlock the ability to excel in taekwondo. Learn more about how flexibility encourages improvements in martial arts and sign up for our summer camps below! The Basics of Kicking in Taekwondo Kicking is an important skill in taekwondo. These movements are also called Chagi. Every belt has a test involving kicking. To pass these tests, your child will learn a series of kicks. They will be instructed on how to practice the kicks with both legs so that they develop balanced skills. Your child will learn kicks that are great for use in sparring (which is also great for use in self-defense outside of a dojo.) They will also learn kicks they might be familiar wit

How Do You Create a Ninja Warrior Course?

Image
What could be better than experiencing our ninja course program in Milton? How about having one in your backyard? It may be too difficult to add in some of the more complex elements of our ninja courses, like the rock wall, but you can still create a challenge worthy of your little ninja warriors. Here are some of the physical obstacles you could add to your yard. Log Steps   Help your child learn balance and agility by using logs. Cut small logs down to size so they are a foot to two feet off the ground (if your child is young, or just starting out, it would be better to use mats that are flush with the ground to avoid injury). Set them up so your child will need to jump to get from one to the other. Use wide logs and ensure they are very stable to encourage safety. Walk the Plank   Walking down a narrow plank is a challenge for people of any age. Get a 2×4 plank of wood and some other supporting materials, like additional planks of wood, to hold it slightly up off the ground. Ensur
